Warm weather! That means swimming, camping, fire pits, and smores! It also means mosquitoes and ticks, which are less fun things about the summer. Don’t let bugs keep you inside on those cool summer nights, or stop you from hitting the local swimming hole during the hot day. (Do people still have swimming holes? Is that something that only exists in movies set in small towns in the ’50s?)
Here are some ways to keeps those blood-suckers far away.
1. Burn Sage or Rosemary
Burning sage isn’t just going to ward off those negative spirits. Apparently, burning sage or rosemary over some coals will send mosquito packing away from the thick, perfume-like smoke.
2. Sawyer Fisherman Formula Picaridin Insect Repellent
According to this study, this bug spray works the best, and has the least ingredients that are harmful to humans. It’s effective against mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, gnats, chiggers and fleas.
3. The Right Garden
The flowers you plant in your summer garden can help a lot with warding off unwanted pests. Marigolds, chrysanthemums, asters, and pyrethrum daisies, and herbs like basil, anise, and coriander, are all known to repel insects.
4. Empty Any Old Water
Eliminate any stagnant water, and you’ll eliminate the breeding grounds. Get rid of any water trapped in old buckets, plant pots, anything.

6. Homemade Citronella Candles
Citronella candles are the most effective way to repell mosquitoes. They’re easy to make and all natural. Here’s a guide.
7. Lavender Oil
While it’s a pleasant smell for humans, bugs hate it. Add about 30 drops to two tablespoons of olive oil, and you’ll smell terrific and be bug free.
8. Eat Garlic
Not only will it keep those vampire bats away (just kidding, they don’t like human blood,) but the smell escaping through your pores will keep bugs away too. Of course, it might keep your beau away as well.
9. Avon Skin So Soft
Not sure what it is, but as soon as you give birth you start swearing that Avon’s Skin So Soft is the best insect repellent. And maybe all those moms are right, Avon has recently come out with a new insect repellent line.
10. B12 Vitamins
For some reason, when you have a healthy supply of B12 makes mosquitoes hate the taste of your blood? Obviously they haven’t been taking their vitamins.
